A new installment in the Mario Party series is coming to the Nintendo 3DS later this year, Nintendo announced this week. The new game will retain similar gameplay mechanics as its predecessors — rolling dice, moving along a game board, and competing in mini games — but this time each game board will have its own set of unique rules. Each board will feature unique interactions that are “very important” as you make use of a variety of items to interfere with opponents and help move yourself along.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata provided some examples. One such board feature included boosts that you collect along the way in hopes of using them “at the right moment” to multiply your dice roll movement. Another example included one in which you must choose to hide in safety from a missile or risk moving and getting hit.
“Gameplay changes dramatically make this a game that is easy to enjoy even if you don’t have a lot of time,” Iwata said. “The mini games test your speed, concentration, luck, while leveraging the unique hardware features of 3DS.”
The new Mario Party arrives this winter 2013.
