Without the traditional battle structure as the classic games, leveling up and evolving your Pokémon in Pokémon GO is a little bit different.
When you catch a Pokémon, you’ll receive two items: Stardust and Pokémon-specific candy. Both of these are important for making your Pokémon stronger.
Stardust is received every time you catch a Pokémon. It’s used to fill the Combat Point level crescent (more on that below).
Additionally, each Pokémon has a specific candy type that is used to evolve. All Evolutions of a Pokémon use the same candy. For example, Pidgey and Pidgeotto both require Pidgey Candy to eventually evolve into a Pidgeot.
When looking at a specific Pokémon, you’ll notice a white crescent above them at the top of your screen. This is a visual representation of your Pokémon’s level. You can increase your Pokémon’s individual level with the “Power Up,” which typically uses Stardust and the Pokémon-specific candy. You’ll notice when Powering Up, that you increase your Pokémon’s Combat Points (CP).
As mentioned above, each Pokémon has a specific candy type associated with its evolutions.
For example, Bulbasaur requires 25 “Bulbasaur Candy” to evolve into a Ivysaur. Ivysaur requries 100 Bulbasaur Candy to evolve into Venusaur.
Charmander requires 25 Charmander Candy to evolve into a Charmeleon, which requires 100 Charmander Candy to evolve into a Charizard.
Every time you catch a Pokémon, you will receive one of that Pokémon’s specific Candy. However, you’ll need much more to level it up.
In order to get more candy for a specific type of Pokémon, you’re going to have to catch more of that Pokémon. Simple as that. The good news is, that if you have multiple of the same Pokémon, you can transfer that Pokémon to the Professor (Transfer can be found at the bottom of a Pokémon’s status page).
Before you transfer Pokémon, you should look at the Pokémon’s Combat Points (CP) to make sure your are transferring the weakest Pokémon. Transferring Pokémon will give you candy for that species.
