Disney Infinity will launch with an ‘accompanying mobile experience’

Disney InfinityEarlier today Disney Interactive unveiled their new “ambitious gaming initiative” which goes by the name Disney Infinity. Similar to Activision’s Skylanders franchise, Disney Infinity will use similar technology to integrate collectible figures with a digital world. Taking it one step further, Disney Infinity will expand upon the concept by enabling gamers to collect unique characters, vehicles, and gadgets, and use them to build and customize their own unique world. This will allow for a more imaginative and creative gameplay experience.

At this point Disney Infinity has only been announced for major platforms — Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, and Wii U. However, Disney Interactive has mentioned the game will launch with an “accompanying mobile experience,” which means we could see some sort of companion app released for iOS and Android devices.

It’s still a little too early for Disney to reveal what exactly this mobile experience will be, but John Blackburn of Avalance Software — the Disney-owned studio that’s developing Disney Infinity — has said there will be a free version. He also mentioned that for “obvious reasons”, the toy component of the game will be less important. Maybe it will allow you to play mini-games to collect more items for you console game?

The possibilities are endless, and if Disney has showed us anything so far it’s that they are willing to think outside of the box. So what type of companion app would you like to see coincide with Disney Infinity?
